About 2023 special exhibition

1.Exhibition theme “Chishakuin Temple Treasure Museum Opening Special Exhibition”

In commemoration of the 1250th anniversary of the birth of the founder of the sect, Kobo Daishi Kukai, materials related to Kobo Daishi will be exhibited. We will exhibit materials related to the early days.
In addition, in tracing the history of Chishaku-in, we will also exhibit materials related to Shingon Esoteric Buddhism.

Materials related to Kobo Daishi include three hanging scrolls of the statue of Kobo Daishi, the scriptures handed down by Kobo Daishi such as the Heart Sutra and Daiho Kobutsu Kegon Sutra, and a peacock brought from China by Kobo Daishi. We will exhibit the “Peacock Myoo Statue” (Important Cultural Property), which is said to be a copy of the design of Myoo.

As materials related to the early days of Chishaku-in, we will exhibit “Tokugawa Ieyasu’s Red Seal” and “Tokugawa Hidetada’s Red Seal”, which contain descriptions of temple territories (territories owned by Chishaku-in) and laws (prohibited matters). In addition, we will exhibit “Esoteric Buddhism ritual implements (Rinho, Katsuma, Shiho)” that are written to have been ordered for the 150th anniversary of Tokugawa Ieyasu’s death as a material that shows the relationship between the Tokugawa family and the Shingon sect.

Materials related to the Shingon sect include the “Ryokai Dai-mandala”, “Ryokai Tane Mandala”, and “Children’s Sutra Mandala”, which are ancient mandalas in the collection of Chishaku-in but are valuable materials that can withstand exhibition. (Important Cultural Property), and two hanging scrolls of “Kokyo Daishi Statue”, the founder of the restoration of Shingon Buddhism, will be exhibited. In addition, Kogyo Daishi has a close relationship with the Aoba Festival and the Winter Hoonko, so we will display the statue of Kobo Daishi according to each period.
