Kyoto National Museum 5 min walk
A museum opened in May of Meiji 30 (1897) and run by an independent administrative institution, the National Institutes for Cultural Heritage. This museum houses a variety of works, from Kyoto’s cultural properties from the Heian period through the Edo period, to East Asian collections of art. The Heisei Chishinkan Wing, newly built in Heisei 25 (2013), houses the permanent exhibitions and the Meiji Kotokan Hall, which was the main building at the time of the museum’s opening and has been designated as important cultural property, houses the special exhibits. The buildings themselves have quite the charm as the retro-style Western buildings stand in line with the more modern constructions.
Rengeō-in Temple, Sanjūsangen-dō 5 min. walk
This name comes from one of the temple’s unique features. There are thirty-three bays (spaces between pillars) that extend from south to north in the main hall’s inner sanctum. (The word Sanjūsan means 33 in Japanese). Around the principal buddha of the Thousand-Armed Kannon (Sahasrabhuja-arya-avalokiteśvara), stand the statues of Fūjin the wind god and Raijin the thunder god as well as the Statues of the Twenty-Eight Guardian Deities. In total, there stand 1,000 Thousand-Armed Kannon statues inside the hall. It is said that among the Kannon statues, there will always be one that looks like the person that you want to see. All are designated national treasures, including the main hall itself.
